Friday Night FLAYVA (FNF) became been a successful and active part of the worship landscape at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in May of 2001. Developed by a son of Harlem, the Rev. Darren A. Ferguson, FLAYVA’s purpose is to bring people together to praise God in a worship setting that invites everyone to be a part of the worship experience, but is focused on young people. Hip Hop tinged gospel songs, Rap that glorifies God and a “Stand-up, sing it and shout it” worship environment are just part of what has made FNF successful.
Now, as a part of Luke 4:18 Ministries, FNF is preaching, teaching and reaching young people in the tri-state area with the life-transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, following the biblical example of the apostle Paul in I Corinthians 9:19-21. We have been led of the Spirit of God that in order to reach the hip hop generation we have to become as “Hip Hop kids in order to reach Hip Hop Kids.” We reject the misogyny, violence and profanity of Hip Hop Music, embracing only hip hop’s elements (turntables, rapping and dancing), not it’s current content (profanity, sex , drug abuse and violence).
The purpose of FLAYVA is to provide young people with preaching and teaching that has practical solutions readily available for the often underserved youth of this community, while simultaneously speaking their language and embracing the best of youth/ hip hop culture.
FLAYVA also offers workshops for churches and schools as requested outside of our Friday night worship and fellowship.
